Old Cairo (Egypt)

Old Cairo is an eminently important place for both the history and the identity of modern-day Cairo. As its name suggests, Old Cairo demarks the foundations of some of the earliest cities, such as Fustat, that stood in the area we now term Cairo. As a consequence of all the history that has passed through the walls here, the area is a traveler’s dream, featuring such standout attractions as the Coptic Museum, the Fortress of Babylon, the Church and Monastery of St. George, and the ever-popular Hanging Church. Quite simply, this is a stunning and stunningly interesting part of the world, and anyone who’s able to visit will feel extremely privileged to do so.

Coptic Cairo is the area of Old Cairo that most travelers want to spend most of their time exploring. The Coptic Museum is a particular draw here, given its preeminent collection of Christian Egyptian artifacts, including a collection of Coptic art that’s simply unrivaled anywhere across the globe. Another breathtaking thing to do while in Coptic Cairo is visit the Babylon Fortress, which once marked the boundary between Lower and Middle Egypt. Today such a boundary has long since gone, but the fortress’ walls stand tall nonetheless, providing a captivating reminder of times past.
Krak Des Chevaliers (Syria)

It is almost 1,000 years since crusaders roamed the halls of the Krak des Chevaliers (fortress of the knights), but this hilltop castle remains as just impressive and majestic as it did in the days of the holy wars. The best preserved of all crusader castles of Syria, the Krak des Chevaliers stands over 2000 feet above sea level, commanding a valley east of Tripoli, Lebanon, that in the Middle Ages was the only route between the ancient cities of Antioch and Beirut. Today, this shining exemplar of crusader architecture is perhaps the most popular of all Syria tourist attractions.

Osaka Castle, Osaka (Japan)

The construction of Osaka Castle (Osakajo) started in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple, which had been destroyed by Oda Nobunaga thirteen years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi intended the castle to become the center of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. It was the largest castle at the time.
However, a few years after Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed the castle and terminated the Toyotomi lineage in 1615. Osaka Castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down.
It was not until 1931 that the present ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle tower was built. During the war it miraculously survived the city wide air raids. Major repair works gave the castle new glamor in 1997. The castle tower is now entirely modern on the inside and even features an elevator for easier accessibility. It houses an informative museum about the castle’s history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The castle tower is surrounded by secondary citadels, gates, turrets, impressive stone walls and moats. The Nishinomaru Garden, encompassing the former “western citadel”, is a lawn garden with 600 cherry trees, a tea house, the former Osaka Guest House and nice views of the castle tower from below.
The entire Osaka Castle Park covers about two square kilometers with lots of green space, sport facilities, a multi-purpose arena (Osakajo Hall) and Hokoku Shrine, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The park is one of Osaka’s most popular hanami spot during the cherry blossom season, which usually takes place in early April.

Mount Kenya

Rising 17,058 feet above sea level, Mount Kenya is Kenya’s tallest mountain. It is the second-tallest in all of Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro, which is found in northeastern Tanzania.
UNESCO has designated the area around Mount Kenya (Mount Kenya National Park) as a World Heritage Site, and thousands of visitors flock here every year to catch a glimpse of, or hike the craggy, rocky mount. Should you be up for climbing Mount Kenya, you should know that it is a more technical climb than Mount Kilimanjaro, so you can brag to your friends about it once you get home. Of course, bragging rights are not exactly why climbers like to challenge Mount Kenya. Instead, they come for the thrill and the views, which are some of the best on the continent. You can see Kilimanjaro in the distance from the peak of Mount Kenya, and you better bring your camera, although it’s likely that your memory will retain the experience quite well should you forget yours. Just don’t plan on climbing Mount Kenya quickly, as it can lead to one heck of a case of altitude sickness. Take it easy, and you’ll find the experience to be much more comfortable

Different peaks make up Mount Kenya, the tallest of which is Batian. The mountain is an extinct volcano, experiencing its last eruption some 3 million years ago. There are several different biomes, or ecosystems, found at varying levels as you make your way up Mount Kenya, and the distinct vegetation zones include broad-leaf and bamboo forests, with nothing but ice and rock at the top. Those interested in climbing Mount Kenya will want to have crampons and ice-picks should they venture to the upper reaches.

Should you be a rather fit individual not looking to ice climb, than you might entertain the idea of heading up Pt. Lenana, which is the third highest peak on the mountain, though this often requires the proper equipment as well. Your guide company should provide the proper equipment rental, so you should not worry too much about that.
