Osaka Castle, Osaka (Japan)

The construction of Osaka Castle (Osakajo) started in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple, which had been destroyed by Oda Nobunaga thirteen years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi intended the castle to become the center of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. It was the largest castle at the time.
However, a few years after Hideyoshi’s death, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed the castle and terminated the Toyotomi lineage in 1615. Osaka Castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down.
It was not until 1931 that the present ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle tower was built. During the war it miraculously survived the city wide air raids. Major repair works gave the castle new glamor in 1997. The castle tower is now entirely modern on the inside and even features an elevator for easier accessibility. It houses an informative museum about the castle’s history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The castle tower is surrounded by secondary citadels, gates, turrets, impressive stone walls and moats. The Nishinomaru Garden, encompassing the former “western citadel”, is a lawn garden with 600 cherry trees, a tea house, the former Osaka Guest House and nice views of the castle tower from below.
The entire Osaka Castle Park covers about two square kilometers with lots of green space, sport facilities, a multi-purpose arena (Osakajo Hall) and Hokoku Shrine, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The park is one of Osaka’s most popular hanami spot during the cherry blossom season, which usually takes place in early April.

Mount Kenya

Rising 17,058 feet above sea level, Mount Kenya is Kenya’s tallest mountain. It is the second-tallest in all of Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro, which is found in northeastern Tanzania.
UNESCO has designated the area around Mount Kenya (Mount Kenya National Park) as a World Heritage Site, and thousands of visitors flock here every year to catch a glimpse of, or hike the craggy, rocky mount. Should you be up for climbing Mount Kenya, you should know that it is a more technical climb than Mount Kilimanjaro, so you can brag to your friends about it once you get home. Of course, bragging rights are not exactly why climbers like to challenge Mount Kenya. Instead, they come for the thrill and the views, which are some of the best on the continent. You can see Kilimanjaro in the distance from the peak of Mount Kenya, and you better bring your camera, although it’s likely that your memory will retain the experience quite well should you forget yours. Just don’t plan on climbing Mount Kenya quickly, as it can lead to one heck of a case of altitude sickness. Take it easy, and you’ll find the experience to be much more comfortable

Different peaks make up Mount Kenya, the tallest of which is Batian. The mountain is an extinct volcano, experiencing its last eruption some 3 million years ago. There are several different biomes, or ecosystems, found at varying levels as you make your way up Mount Kenya, and the distinct vegetation zones include broad-leaf and bamboo forests, with nothing but ice and rock at the top. Those interested in climbing Mount Kenya will want to have crampons and ice-picks should they venture to the upper reaches.

Should you be a rather fit individual not looking to ice climb, than you might entertain the idea of heading up Pt. Lenana, which is the third highest peak on the mountain, though this often requires the proper equipment as well. Your guide company should provide the proper equipment rental, so you should not worry too much about that.
Kremlin, Moscow (Russia)
Exploring the Kremlin is one of the most extraordinary experiences to have while visiting Russia. It sits above and beyond all other attractions in Russia, like the well-known Hermitage Museum, and is the most famous of all sights in the country. Sitting with a commanding presence on the northern bank of the Moscow River, the Moscow Kremlin covers the Borovitsky Hill, taking up a large, triangular shaped piece of land.

The entire property is surrounded by a large wall, called the Kremlin Wall, spanning more than two kilometers in length and originally constructed entirely out of red brick.

The main attractions in Russia inside the Kremlin include the Armory, the Patriarch”s Palace, the Annunciation Cathedrals, Archangel, and Assumption. The mystic sanctuary was founded by Prince Yury Dolgoruky who constructed the initial building on the hilltop back in 1147 AD.
Meaning citadel, castle, or fortress, the Kremlin Russia began to grow from its initial building. Development of the land surrounding the first building continued as the city of Moscow popped up all around it.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, the park is now one of the most popular eco-tourism treks in the country. The Tsingy National Park is one of the only habitats for certain rare chameleon species, the endangered Madagascar fish eagle, and several lemur species. Treks in this park can also include cave exploration and camping. Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, together with the Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, form a protected area which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bemaraha National Park is located to the north of the reserve and is the point of access for most tourists interested in exploring the tsingy, a Magalasy word referring to the needle-like karst limestone formations that make the park such a popular tourist trek. In fact, the Magalasy word tsingy literally means “where one cannot walk barefoot,” a perfect description of the pointed rock pinnacles.

The most famous attraction of Tsingy de Bemaraha is the park’s namesake, the mineral forest of limestone formations known as tsingy. The natural limestone plateaus of the area were eroded by rains and floods, causing fissures, caverns, canyons, and peaks of limestone to form. The scenery at Bemaraha National Park is dramatic, with hundreds of needle-like karst peaks interspersed with lush pristine rainforests. The unique structure of the tsingy makes each limestone formation exceptionally rich in wildlife: The summit, steep slopes, and base of each tsingy form a separate ecosystem, allowing niche animal and plant species to develop that are found nowhere else in the world.
